Observations of Individual Giant Molecular Clouds in M 81

چکیده
Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We present 12 CO J=1-0 observations from the Caltech Millimeter Array of a field in the nearby spiral galaxy M81. We detect emission from three features that are the size of large giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Milky Way Galaxy and M31, but are larger than any known in M33 or the SMC. The M81 clouds have diameters ∼ 100 pc and molecular masses ∼ 3 × 10 5 M ⊙. These are the first GMCs to be detected in such an early type galaxy (Sab) or in a normal galaxy outside the Local Group. The clouds we have detected do not obey the size–linewidth relation obeyed by GMCs in our Galaxy and in M33, and some of them may be GMC complexes that contain several small GMCs. One of these does show signs of sub-structure, and is shaped like a ring section with three separate peaks. At the center of this ring section lies a giant HII region, which may be associated with the molecular clouds.

We report about high spatial resolution observations made with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer of the 12CO(J = 1 → 0) emission from a 1.1 × 1.1 kpc plane-of-sky field on a spiral arm of Messier 81. With a beam of 5′′ ≈ 90 pc, we identify 6 giant molecular cloud complexes with virial masses of ≈ 106 M , including one associated with a giant HII region. The deduced N (H2)/ICO ratios are a...
متن کاملStructure and Conditions in Massive Star Forming Giant Molecular Clouds
Massive stars form in clusters within self-gravitating molecular clouds. The size scale of these clusters is sufficiently large that nonthermal, or turbulent, motions of the gas must be taken into account when considering their formation. Millimeter wavelength radio observations of the gas and dust in these clouds reveal a complex, self-similar structure that reflects the turbulent nature of th...

We present the first interferometric 12 CO (J = 1 → 0) map of the entire Hα disk of M33. The 13 ′′ diameter synthesized beam corresponds to a linear resolution of 50 pc, sufficient to distinguish individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs). From these data we generated a catalog of 148 GMCs with an expectation that no more than 15 of the sources are spurious. The catalog is complete down to GMC ma...

Context. The amount of molecular gas is a key to understanding the future star formation in a galaxy. Because H2 is difficult to observe directly in dense and cold clouds, tracers such as the CO molecule are used. However, at low metallicities especially, CO only traces the shielded interiors of the clouds. In this context, millimeter dust emission can be used as a tracer to unveil the total de...
